  • Description:

    Betadine belongs to a class of antiseptics known as iodophores, polivinilpirrolidone which slow the release of iodine. Betadine-iodine solution of 7.5% contains 0.75% available iodine.

    Antiseptics (sometimes called germicides) Betadine is a drug that kills or prevents the growth of micro-organisms such as bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa and bacterial spores.


  • Contraindications and cautions:

    Not for use in patients with thyroid disorders, with renal dysfunctions, with known or suspected iodine hypersensitivity. The use of Betadine in pregnancy and lactation should be avoided.


  • Indication:

    Betadine is a widely used topical disinfectant, used in hospitals for cleansing and disinfecting the skin, preparing the skin preoperatively and treating infections susceptible to iodine. It may also be used for the treatment of wounds, lacerations and burns, trichomonal, monilial and nonspecific vaginitis, cervicitis, oral infections, and dental procedures.


  • Interaction:

    Povidoni iodidum may be incompatible with some disinfectants. Grease, blood, pus, substances with acidic reactions and alkaline environments can decrease the effectiveness of Betadine.


  • Method of application:

    Used for disinfection of surgeon hands: 5 ml solution is applied on the palm of the hand and spread over both hands for 5 minutes, the hands are then washed, this procedure can be repeated.

    For preparation of the Surgical Area is used 1ml solution of Betadine per 50-70cm². For Gargles - 1 teaspoonful of Betadine solution mixed with 50ml of water (ones a day). Betadine vaginal suppositories used 1-2 times daily, the treatment should be continued for up to 14 days.

    Betadine ointment is applied in a small amount on the injured area.


  • Overdose:

    Skin irritation, severe allergic reactions. Treatment: in such cases the treatment with Povidone Iodide must be interrupt.


  • Side effects:

    Betadine can cause severe allergic reactions.
