  • Description:

    Dimedrol works by blocking the effect of histamine at H1 receptor sites. It has an antihistamine, sedative, hypnotic, antiemetic and moderate action.


  • Contraindications and cautions:

    Dimedrol is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to any of its ingredients. Caution must be used in performing tasks which require alertness (eg, operating machinery or driving). Dimedrol is contraindicated in patient with nasal bleeding.


  • Indication:

    Diphenhydramine, an antihistamine, relieves allergic diseases with different etiology (urticaria, allergic conjunctivitis and others). Diphenhydramine is also used to prevent and treat motion sickness, induce sleep, treat Parkinson's disease, vomiting pregnant, Ménière syndrome and relieve cough caused by minor throat or airway irritation.


  • Interaction:

    MAO inhibitors prolong and intensify the anticholinergic effects of Dimedrol. Dimedrol may increase the hypnotic and sedative effect of central nervous system (CNS).


  • Method of application:

    Adults generally take from 25mg to 50mg 1-3 times daily or injectable diphenhydramine 10-15mg. The duration of treatment is 10-15 days.

    For Children 2 years old daily dose is: 10mg/day; children 3-4years old: 10mg for 2 times per day; children 5-9 years old: 20mg for 2 times per day; children 10-14 years old: 20mg for 3 times per day.


  • Overdose:

    Considerable over dosage can lead to drowsiness in adults, irritation in children, pupil dilation (mydriasis), dry mouth and throat. Treatment: gastric lavage, osmotic laxative. In hypotension vasopressin is used. Stimulatives of CNS are contraindicated.


  • Special precautions:

    Dimedrol is not recommended for patients with glaucoma, heart disease, high blood pressure asthma. Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Diphenhydramine may cause dizziness or somnolency. Use alcohol cautiously. Alcohol may increase somnolency and dizziness while taking diphenhydramine.


  • Side effects:

    Diphenhydramine can commonly cause a profound drowsiness, dry mouth and throat, rapid or irregular heartbeat (tachycardia), nausea, hypotension, low blood pressure, palpitations.
