Serenoa repens (Bartram) Small. (syn. Sabalis serrulata (Michaux) Nutall), Coriphoideae is a cobby north-american palm tree. American Indians used the partly dried fruit of the palm tree to treat urinary bladder, urethra and prostate gland diseases. Now scientists get extracts of Seronoa repens fruit (by water, lipotropic substances or CO2).
Aqueous extracts have antiandrogenic action. Extracts are rich in unsaturated fatty acids, sterols (for example: β-sitosterols) and polysaccharides, reduce the activity of 5-α reductase of prostate gland and the transformation testosterone in dihydrotestosterone, antagonize the dihydrotestosterone fixation with the help of its receptors. The drug reduces edema and prostate gland inflammation. Antiandrogenic action of Serenoa repens extract comes to nothing more than prostate gland tissues without disturbing hormonal equilibrium of organism.
