  • Description:

Azithromycin is an azalide, a subclass of macrolide antibiotics.

Azithromycin is an antibiotic with a broad spectrum of bactericidal activity against many gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria:

Gram- positive bacteria: Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus viridans, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae.

Gram – negative bacteria: Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Bordetella pertussis, Legionella pneumophila.

Anaerobic microorganisms: Chlamydia trachomatis, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Peptostreptococcus species, Ureaplasma urealyticum, Treponema pallidum, Borrelia burgdoferi.

    Azithromycin demonstrates cross-resistance with erythromycin-resistant gram-positive strains.

It is readily absorbed, and diffused into most tissues, phagocytes and fibroblasts. Due to the high concentration in phagocytes, azithromycin is actively transported to the site of infection.

  • Contraindications and cautions:

Sumamed is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any macrolide or ketolide antibiotic.

  • Indication:

Antibiotic with a broad spectrum effect. It is a drug used against such bacteria: Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Mycoplasma, Treponema pallidum, Borditella pertussis, Chlamydia and others.

It is absorbed well and allocate in tissues and output from the body through bile.

Prescribed for O.R.L infection, complication in the respiratory tract, whooping cough, syphilis, stomach ulcers with Helicobacter pylori.

  • Interaction:

Antacids containing aluminum and magnesium intercept intestinal absorption. Azitromycin enhances serum concentration of theophylline and indirect anticoagulants. Reduces the clearance of triazolama and potentize it.

  • Method of application:

500 mg as a single dose on Day 1, followed by 250 mg once daily on Days 2 through 5. The total dose is usually 1,5g.

  • Special precautions:

Because azithromycin is principally eliminated via the liver, caution should be exercised when azithromycin is administered to patients with impaired hepatic function. A similar effect with azithromycin cannot be completely ruled out in patients at increased risk for prolonged cardiac repolarization.

  • Side effects:

Some side effects can be the following: Palpitations, dyspepsia, flatulence, vomiting, melena and cholestatic jaundice, monilia, vaginitis and nephritis, dizziness, headache, vertigo, somnolence and allergic reaction.
