- Description:
AUGMENTIN is an oral antibacterial combination consisting of the semisynthetic antibiotic amoxicillin and the β-lactamase inhibitor, clavulanate potassium.
Clavulanate potassium possesses the ability to inactivate a wide variety of β-lactamases by blocking the active sites of these enzymes.
Augmentin is an antibiotic with a broad spectrum of bactericidal activity against many gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
Gram- positive bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Streptococcus faecalis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus viridans, anaerobi: Closridium spp., Peptostreptococcus spp.
Gram – negative bacteria: Escherichia coli, Haemophilus influenzae, Klebsiella species, Moraxella catarrhalis, Enterobacter species, Proteus mirabilis, Proteus vulgaris, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Legionella species; anaerobe: Bacteroides species and bacteroides fragilis inclusive.
- Contraindications and cautions:
Augmentin is contraindicated to patients with a history of allergic reactions to any penicillin, infectious mononucleosis, lymphatic leukemia.
- Indication:
Augmentin is active in infections caused by Streptococci, staphylococci, gonococcus, mycoplasm, etc.
It is assimilated and absorbed well by the organism. It doesn’t irritate the path of gastrointestinal mucous membrane. It is stable in the presence of gastric acid.
Indications: Angina, Otitis media, acute and chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, pneumonia, cysts, gonorrhea, stomach ulcers and stomach cancer, cholecystitis, dental infection.
- Interaction:
Probenecid decreases the renal tubular secretion of amoxicillin. Do not combine it with disulfiram. Combination is incompatible with the aminoglucosides. Augmentin increases the effect of anticoagulants.
- Method of application:
Adults and children: the dose is 375mg tablet of augmentin 3 times daily, in severe infections – 625mg 3 times daily.
- Oral Suspension:
- babies: ½.............teaspoonful 3 times daily;
- Children 1-7 years old: one teaspoonful 3 times daily;
- Children 7-14 years old: two teaspoonfuls 3 times daily.
- Drops: babies: 0, 75-1, 25 ml.
- In severe infections augmentin is used as intravenous infusion:
- Adults and children up to 12 years old - 1,2g every 8 hours;
- Children from 3 months to 12 years old - 30mg/kg;
- 3 months premature newborns and those who belong to the perinatal life take 30mg/kg every 12 hours.
The duration of treatment is 5-14 days
- Overdose:
In case of overdose the patient can have an attempt at emesis, nausea and diarrhea.
The treatment: symptomatic therapy. In severe infections hemodialysis is carried out.
- Special precautions:
While Augmentin possesses the characteristic low toxicity of the penicillin group of antibiotics, periodic assessment of organ system functions, including renal, hepatic, and hematopoietic function, is advisable during prolonged therapy. Augmentin is also indicated in patients allergic to penicillin and cephalosporin.
- Side effects:
Following overdosage, patients have experienced primarily gastrointestinal symptoms including stomach and abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. The most frequently reported adverse effects were diarrhea/loose stools, nausea, skin rashes and urticaria, vomiting and vaginitis. Anemia, including hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, thrombocytopenic purpura.
